High school wrestlers in Michigan, through the Michigan High School Athletic Association, are required to participate in one of the premier weight monitoring programs for high school wrestling in the country. The program has multiple purposes, but the emphasis is on the establishment of a minimum wrestling weight, a programmatic method to assist in that weight establishment (bodyfat assessment through skinfold measurement by an Assesor) and a nutritional education requirement for coaches, parents and wrestlers annually.

Oakwood Sports Medicine fully supports the Weight Monitoring Program. All of the athletic trainers in our program are qualified Skinfold Assessors and we also provide the nutrition education seminars for wrestlers and parents. Our expertise is coming to a wrestling program near you!

The last regular season football games will be played this Friday. For some teams, there will be an extra week of practice and one more game. For the three Dearborn Public Schools, this high school football season seems like one from the past; all three high school teams are expecting to make the state playoffs. Dearborn is 6-2. Fordson is 8-0 and Edsel Ford is 7-1. It has been many years since all three schools have demonstrated such a fine showing on the gridiron. Congratulations!

As part of our committment to community education, we develop a newsletter several times throughout the year covering a variety of topics related to wellness, athletics, orthopedic conditions and sports medicine. The Oakwood Sports Medicine staff conceptualizes, creates, writes and edits the entire newsletter. This gives the staff a great opportunity to enhance their own skills. Thank you this time around goes to Stacy Gutierrez, ATC from New Boston Huron HS for taking on the editorial duties.

The annual Red October Run took place in front of Oakwood Annapolis Hospital recently which featured a 5k run, 10k run, a 5k walk and a one mile Junior October run for kids. Hundreds of participants turned out to chase the morning dew off the grass to take part in this year’s event. Congratulations to the 10k overall women’s winner Emily Masters (40:22) and 10k overall men’s winner Joe Verellen (32:55).
